There are 25 in the mix at nomination stage for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) including three from the Sydney stables of Chris Waller.
As expected Waller has nominated for the reigning Tattersall’s Tiara winner Red Tracer, Catkins and She’s Clean.
Red Tracer was last seen bombing out in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) when 10th to River Of Lad from a wide gate on June 7, an effort she’ll be out to improve on as she attempts to go back-to-back in the Tatt’s Tiara.
Last year she won the Group 1 on the back of a Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) win, the race her stablemate Catkins was meant to come via this winter.
Dubawi four-year-old Catkins however was scratched from the Dane Ripper on vet’s advice meaning she runs on Saturday, if accepted, for the first time since her sixth to Diamond Drille in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney on April 19.
She’s Clean meanwhile rounds out Waller’s Tiara contingent this year, the Redoute’s Choice five-year-old last seen running fifth to Ellawisdom in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
This year it is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Cosmic Endeavour who shoots for the Dane Ripper Stakes – Tattersall’s Tiara double achieved by Red Tracer 12 months ago.
A daughter of ill-fated sire Northern Meteor, three-year-old Cosmic Endeavour has won three of her past four starts including the Scone Inglis Guineas in Sydney before her Dane Ripper success in Brisbane.
Waterhouse enjoyed the double there with her Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner Driefontein having run second in the Dane Ripper, the Fastnet Rock four-year-old looking to turn the tables in the Tattersall’s Tiara.
Also coming via the Dane Ripper are the likes of Luke Price’s third placed Belle De Coeur, the John Thompson-trained Peron (4th), Perth Group 1 performer Platinum Rocker (5th) and Scone-trained Myamira (6th).
One of the other headline Tattersall’s Tiara nominees meanwhile is the John O’Shea-trained Steps In Time.
The Coolmore Classic winner has her swansong race before retiring to life as a broodmare on the weekend and will hoping for a dry track after failing in the mud last start on April 12 when 13th to Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
One hopeful coming off a far better Group 1 run meanwhile is the Ciaron Maher-trained filly Srikandi.
The three-year-old daughter of Dubawi won six on the trot before her last start third in the Stradbroke Handicap when beaten just over a length by the Sunshine Coast-trained winner River Lad.
A last start winner looking to keep the good times rolling in the Tattersall’s Tiara is then the Mick Price-trained Jazz Song.
The three-year-old Fastnet Rock filly improved on two fifth place finishes, firstly behind Srikandi in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) and then Sir Moments in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m), to win last Saturday’s Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich.
Also coming via a decent run in that race are the likes of the David Brideoake & David Feek-trained runner-up Griante and fourth placegetter Spitfire Lady.
Other last start winners in the mix along with Jazz Song then include Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup winner at Doomben (May 24) Angel Of Mercy and the Les Bridge-trained Avoid Lighting coming off successive Randwick wins including the June Stakes in the wet back on the seventh.
