Honorius Heads 2013 David Jones Cup Field

David Payne’s last start Craven Plate winner Honorius will shoot for another Group 3 win this weekend, this time travelling to Melbourne for a shot at the David Jones Cup 2013 on Saturday.

Honorius

Honorius will carry the topweight in Saturday's David Jones Cup 2013.

The other Cup race on Caulfield Cup Day 2013, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) features a final field of 11 stayers who are just off the better class runners of the season.

Set to carry the 58kg top-weight with Kiwi expat James McDonald in the saddle is Holy Roman Emperor stallion Honorius who comes off a 2000m win in the Craven Plate.

The David Jones Cup will be their first run in Victoria since their unsuccessful Victoria Derby run last November, when eighth to Fiveandahalfstar.

They have form around some crack gallopers however including their third to Hawkspur in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) during the winter; the Chris Waller-trained Hawkspur favourite for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

The other last start winner in the David Jones Cup field this weekend is then the Darren Weir-trained Hurdy Gurdy Man who will carry 55.5kg from gate four.

Street Cry six-year-old Hurdy Gurdy Man won at Murto over 2040m on October 5 when carrying 62.5kg, so will relish the massive drop back in distance here.

They are a winner up to the mile and a half having won the Group 3 Hobart Cup in Tasmania back in February but has been luckless since, the David Jones Cup their first real shot at another suitable black type.

Jake Stephens’ in-form Gris Caro (barrier six) is then the only other runner weighted above the 54kg minimum with 55kg, Dom Tourneur to ride the grey for their third run this time in.

First up they won the Balaklava Cup over the mile on September 4 before their brave last start second in the JRA Cup (2050m) at Moonee Valley behind Mourinho.

Other notable hopes then include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Epsom Handicap fourth placed Flying Spur four-year-old Spurtonic in gate two with Glen Boss riding, and the rails-drawn High Chaparral gelding Garud for Michael Moroney.
