Peter Snowden’s progressive youngster Long John has remained at the top of the Caulfield Guineas 2013 odds after the final field and barrier draw for the weekend’s classic was released yesterday.

This year’s $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) will be an acid test for the 16 three-year-old colts and geldings engaged to face off as the pressure of a big race meet, and the taxing Randwick mile, sorts the pretenders from the genuine spring contenders.
Having dominated markets over the past month, Snowden’s Street Cry gelding Long John is now installed as the $3.80 Caulfield Guineas favourite having come up trumps with barrier one.
With the most successful Guineas draw in recent years, Long John is set to get a prime run for their maiden Group 1 assignment.
Winner of the Listed Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes over the 1400m at Flemington two back, they were last seen running a length away third to Éclair Big Bang in the Guineas Prelude, an effort they are tipped to improve on going up to the 1600m for the first time.
There are then three other single-figure fancies in the latest Caulfield Guineas markets with:
- #7 Prince Harada ($4.80) – Tony Vasil’s Haradasun colt is the early market mover, well-liked by the punters despite their double digit draw (12), back-to-back winner in their opening two starts during the winter, second in the McNeil first-up as a 3YO and were far from disgraced when fifth in a strong Golden Rose last start, month between runs will see them fresh and mile will suit
- #10 El Roca ($7.50) – Drawn sweetly in barrier two one outside the favourite, Trent Busuttin’s Kiwi raider was runner-up in the Prelude last start in a fine effort that they will be looking to repeat again here, before that was undefeated back home in NZ, Fastnet Rock colt so should handle the 1600m
- #6 Éclair Big Bang ($8) – Phillip Stokes’ Morphettville-trained Savabeel gelding defeated Long John and a few other of these in the Prelude and from barrier four is a solid chance to do so again, before that was a good third in the Danehill Stakes against good class gallopers at Flemington and also a dual winner in Adelaide over the 1000m giving them a three-from-four record not to be frowned at
For punters after a bit of extra value some of the double figure fancies to consider include Golden Rose runner-up Dissident ($12) who trainer Peter Moody is warning punters not to write off, Gerald Ryan’s recent Group 2 Danehill Stakes winner Charlie Boy ($14) and last start Group 2 Stutt Stakes winner over the Moonee Valley mile Divine Calling ($14).
