After a disappointing last start loss that bought an end to a nice winning streak, the Darren Weir-trained Broken is out to return to form in the Schillaci Stakes 2013 in Melbourne on Saturday.

One of seven Group races on the 10-race Caulfield Guineas Day card, this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Schweppes Schillaci Stakes (1000m) is scheduled as Race 4 at 2:00pm (AEST).
The weight-for-age sprint has attracted nine hopefuls, the top-rated of which is seven-year-old Broken.
During August the gelding enjoyed back-to-back black type wins including the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) where they defeated Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom.
At Flemington on September 7 however Broken could only manage to finish 11th when beaten four lengths by Speediness in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m), an effort they are out to improve on this weekend.
A number of their Schillaci Stakes rivals however look to have the form edge coming off some good runs including two last start winners.
One is the Byron Cozamanis-trained Vatican.
A sprint specialist, God’s Own five-year-old Vatican was last seen winning a 950m Moonee Valley race first-up on September 27 when carrying 60kg, their drop back to 58.5kg under WFA to suit on Saturday.
Peter Snowden then prepares the other last start winner with his promising Exceed And Excel col Kuroshio who gets in on the 53kg lightweight as a three-year-old.
Kuroshio was outclassed in the Golden Slipper (14th of 16) and San Domenico Stakes (70th of 7) in recent runs but improved when dropping back to just 52kg for the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last month to win.
Other notable hopes then include the returning stakes winner Unpretentious on the rails with Damien Oliver to ride from gate one, and the in-form Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Smackdown.
