Betting on the weekend’s major, Melbourne’s PB Lawrence Stakes 2013, is starting to heat up with Melbourne Cup-bound Puissance De Lune starting to ease out in the markets.

After opening at $2.40 to win Saturday’s $220,000 Group 2 Back to Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up, the price on the Darren Weir-trained Puissance De Lune to resume a winner has drifted out to $2.60.
The talented Queen Elizabeth Stakes winning grey however is still the clear favourite in both these odds and the futures betting on the 2013 Melbourne Cup in November.
Weir is confident and so too is jockey Glen Boss but the punters aren’t sure if first-up over the 1400m Puissance De Lune will be wound up enough.
Another horse to ease out in the PB Lawrence Stakes odds is then the second favourite Second Effort.
Clinton McDonald’s last start Bletchingly Stakes winner won this race first-up 12 months ago and is out to dual winners My Peak (1960, 1962) and Tauto (1971, 1972) by taking out the trophy again this year.
Their form coming into the race is red hot and originally they were paying $4.80 to go back-to-back.
They have since drifted out to $5.50 however with punters starting to come hard and fast for the now $5.50 equal second elect Launay.
In from their inaugural price of $7, Peter Snowden’s veteran stayer is currently the oldest horse getting around in the Snowden stable as a seven-year-old.
Despite their age this son of champion thoroughbred turned champion sire Lonhro has had just 28 starts before Saturday, Snowden confident they are still capable of racing like a horse half their age.
“He looks well and his work has been great,” Snowden told The Daily Telegraph this week.
“He has certainly gone ahead since his first-up run and I think he has a very good chance.
“We have got to take on the Melbourne Cup favourite but this might be the right time to do it.
“Launay is meeting Puissance De Lune with a run under our belt, and over what is his best trip where it is not necessarily the other horse’s best trip.”
Launay was last seen running first-up in the Bletchingly Stakes when a close third behind Second Effort, a result they are tipped to improve on second-up over their pet distance of 1400m.
The only other move in the markets has been a slight shift away from the Gai Waterhouse-trained Under The Sun ($9.50 out to $10).
A five-year-old No Excuse Needed gelding, Under The Sun was the emphatic three and a half length winner of the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill two back.
Their last start however was a disappointing seventh to Coup Ay Tee in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) on August 3, also in Sydney, Saturday to be their first run in Melbourne since November of 2011.
