After scoring their first race win for new trainer Chris Waller in the Chipping Norton Stakes, former Queensland galloper Shoot Out will seek back-to-back autumn Group 1’s in the Ranvet Stakes 2012 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.
Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out headlines the 2012 Ranvet Stakes nominations for Saturday
Fifteen gallopers have been nominated for the weight-for-age $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) this year, the same number of early entries the meeting’s feature race – the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) – also attracted.
A number of smart fillies and mares heading towards the 2012 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick next month will go to the Coolmore Classic including Secret irer and Streama who pay $13 and $14 respectively in the bookmaker.com.au markets for the Doncaster.
In the 2012 Ranvet Stakes, another $13 chance for the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) on April 21 will also have their next start, Shoot Out.
The High Chaparral five-year-old scored their maiden Group 1 win in the 2010 Australian Derby when under the preparation of John Wallace.
Last start they saluted in their second thoroughbred major winning the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm third-up for the season and third-up for Waller.
On Saturday the horse will attempt the Chipping Norton Stakes – Ranvet Stakes double, and Waller is confident that despite the 2000-metre distance of the Ranvet, it will prove the right lead-up race for the Doncaster.
“Rangirangdoo ran (second) in the Ranvet before his (2010) Doncaster (win),” Waller said.
“I wasn’t really sure if the Ranvet was the right race for (Shoot Out), but Hugh (Bowman, jockey) said 2000 metres would be OK.
“It allows him to go into the Doncaster fresh with a month between runs, and it has worked before.”
Success will see Shoot Out’s named etched in the history books along with previous Chipping Norton – Ranvent Stakes double winners including Tie The Knot, Super Impose, Sky High and Bernborough.
It would also seem him Tulloch as a former Australian Derby champion to salute in the double.
Waller has also nominated for the aforementioned Rangirangdoo in the Ranvet Stakes, the injury-prone veteran coming off a credible fourth in the Chipping Norton.
“He is going all right but with him it is always one run at a time,” Waller said of Rangirangdoo who will be ridden by Corey Brown on Saturday.
Last year’s Ranvet Stakes winner Zavite will be back to defend their title, the Anthony Cummings-trained Zabeel nine-year-old looking for their first win since.
Cummings’ legendary father Bart is also represented in the 2012 Ranvet Stakes nominations this year with two from his stables in smart German stayer Illo, coming off a failed attempt at the Australian Cup, and surprise Australian Cup fourth placegetter Precedence.
The first two over the line in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) from March 10 at Flemington also have their eyes on the Ranvet Stakes prize with Peter Moody’s European import Manighar and Caulfield Cup winning mare Southern Speed.
The Ranvet Stakes is shaping up as a beauty on Saturday with the early entries full of talent.
Other notable hopefuls include Graeme Rogerson’s last-start New Zealand Stakes winner Scarlett Lady, Chipping Norton stakes third placegetter Trusting and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Brisbane Cup winner Tullamore.
