Maluckyday Leads The BMW Betting & Odds – Golden Slipper Day Race 5

Aside from the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), the second richest race on the Rosehill card this Saturday is the 2011 The BMW and Maluckyday has opened the favourite in the betting odds for the $2.25 million showdown.

Running as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:25pm (AEDST) on Saturday, the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) field features 11 quality stayers lead by the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Zabeel four-year-old Maluckyday.

Coming up trumps with barrier one for Saturday and due to be ridden by Jim Cassidy, last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday is the clear favourite to win The BMW sitting at around $2.70 in the markets.

Last start Maluckyday ran fourth to shock winner Zavite in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 19 and over the extra distance The BMW provides, the genuine stayer is set to thrive.

Zavite & Descarado

Ravet Stakes winner Zavite (Inside) and runner-up Descarado (Outside) will face off again in The BMW on Saturday

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Descarado occupies the second line of The BMW betting at a quote of $3.50.

After running an extraordinarily close second to $101 roughie Zavite in the Ranvet, reigning Caulfield Cup champion Descarado is tipped to improve on Saturday and possibly add a second Group 1 win to their record.

Lloyd William’s promising grey Linton is the only other runner in this year’s The BMW field at a single-figure price to win paying $6.50 at bookies around the country.

The four-year-old son of Galileo has drawn ideally with gate four and showed great improvement in running second to previous Melbourne Cup winner Shocking in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 12, the addition of blinkers for the first time sharpening Linton right up.

Other horses in the market for the 2011 The BMW include Ranvet Stakes’ winner Zavite ($15) and third placegetter Hawk Island ($15).

Meanwhile Cedarberg has been the best backed The BMW hopeful so far, still a roughie for the win but having firmed in from $41 to $31 in the past day.

The other market mover is the David Hayes-trained import Laristan backed in from $26 to $21 to claim an upset The BMW result.
