2011 AAMI Golden Slipper Field, Barriers & Betting

Foxwedge

Foxwedge is one of the favourites for the Golden Slipper despite a wide draw

This Saturday April 2 the richest race for two-year-olds in the world will take place at Rosehill with the 2011 Golden Slipper and here we take a look at the confirmed Golden Slipper field, barriers and latest betting odds.

Earlier today a full 16-horse field plus one emergency were accepted for Saturday’s $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Wearing the number one saddlecloth will be Sepoy, Peter Snowden’s Elusive Quality colt still the favourite in the Golden Slipper odds at a quote of around $3.20.

Sepoy drew gate 10 in the Golden Slipper barrier draw, the widest gate the Blue Diamond Stakes winner has had to start from to date.

Second favourite in the Golden Slipper betting is Anthony Cummings’ up-and-coming Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile.

Last start Smart Missile claimed an upset victory over Sepoy in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill and could be primed to defeat the favourite again after drawing ideally with barrier five for the Golden Slipper.

Cummings was reportedly over the moon with the gate allocation for Smart Missile stating his runner looked one of the hardest to beat.

While a wet track at Rosehill will be detrimental to Sepoy, beaten for the first time due to rain, the predicted showery weather should not faze Smart Missile.

The only other runner at single-figure odds to become the 2011 Golden Slipper winner is Foxwedge, the John O’Shea-trained colt also by sire Fastnet Rock.

Foxwedge ran a game third in the Todman Stakes on March 19 after jumping from barrier one but has come up with a more difficult gate for the Golden Slipper with barrier 11.

Best value pick of the AAMI Golden Slipper field following today’s barrier draw looks to be the Clarry Conners-trained filly Satin Shoes.

Forgotten by the punters after running second as the beaten favourite behind Elite Falls in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) last start, Satin Shoes is sitting at a generous price of around $13 in the latest Golden Slipper markets.

Prior to the Reisling, Satin Shoes enjoyed three straight wins and has come up with the perfect barrier two draw for Saturday making her a flying chance to cause an upset Golden Slipper result.
