The 2011 Golden Slipper, the richest race for two-year-olds in the world, is set to run at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday April 2 and as D-Day approaches for the hopeful two-year-olds heading towards the $3.5 million event the Golden Slipper betting markets are also heating up.
Satin Shoes is the biggest market firmer in the Golden Slipper odds, having shortened in from $15 to equal $11 second favourite at Luxbet after her first-up victory in the $100,000 Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on the weekend.
Prepared by Clarry Conners, the daughter of Flying Spur won on debut in the City Tattersalls Plate at Randwick in mid-October last year and showed nothing but improvement with her easy one length win over Elite Falls in the Widden Stakes.
Tearing up the Randwick track last Saturday, Satin Shoes ran the fastest winning time by a two-year-old in the Widden recording a blistering 1:03.06 with her all-the-way victory.
Conners is seeking his fifth Golden Slipper Stakes success this year after previously having won the Sydney Autumn Carnival showpiece with Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), Prowl (1998) and Belle Du Jour (2000).
The other promising two-year-old that has shortened in the Golden Slipper odds with a recent win is the Lee Freedman-trained Atomic.
Atomic is now at a quote of $21, in from $26 at Luxbet, to take out the Golden Slipper Stakes this year after the previously unraced Commands colt won on debut in the Listed Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on February 9.
Freedman is also a four-time Golden Slipper winning trainer.
Peter Snowden’s unbeaten Elusive Quality colt Sepoy has further firmed in the Golden Slipper odds, now the clear $6 favourite in the Luxbet markets.
Sepoy is odds-on favourite to win the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on January 26 as he heads towards the Golden Slipper Stakes field.
Last Saturday, February 19 Sepoy bought his career record up to three wins from as many starts storming home to an emphatic victory in the Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude at Caulfield.
His latest success saw him shorten into the $1.80 top elect in early Blue Diamond betting and also shorten in from $8 to $6 to become the 2011 Golden Slipper winner.
Unbeaten Not A Single Doubt filly Karuta Queen is the $11 equal second favourite in the Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet along with Satin Shoes.
The Neville Layt-trained Karuta Queen most recently saw success when she travelled to the Gold Coast to win the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) by three lengths on January 15.
Other up-and-coming juveniles high up the Golden Slipper Stakes betting markets include Inglis Nursery/Inglis Classic double winner Pane In The Glass ($13), David Payne’s More Than Ready filly Defiant Dame ($14), Fastnet Rock colt and stakes winner Smart Missile ($15) and unbeaten Stratum colt Straight Gold ($16).
