After Karuta Queen gave the punters a win in the 2011 Magic Millions Classic result at the Gold Coast, the next race of the day was won by the Darren Smith-trained Midnight At Ascot who scored a narrow victory in the $82,000 Magic Millions Country Cup (1400m).
Four-year-old Mossman gelding Midnight At Ascot ($4.20 Luxbet) was originally an emergency for the Magic Millions Country Cup but gained a late start after a number of scratchings.
Ridden patiently by in-form hoop Corey Brown, Midnight At Ascot burst through up the middle to lead the field after hitting the home straight.
Looking like they would run away with a massive victory, Paul Nolan’s Catbird gelding Golden Kid raced up to meet Midnight At Ascot and the pair made a thrilling two horse race out of the event.
On the line Midnight At Ascot was just two strong and narrowly defeated Golden Kid.
In a photo-finish for third after the remainder of the runners had been left behind, Racing Heart was awarded the final place.
Midnight At Ascot has now won five of their 22 career starts.
