The 2010 Melbourne Cup results are in, with the pronounced favourite So You Think finishing third behind Melbourne Cup winner Americain and gallant runner-up Maluckyday in the famous Flemington feature.
As always it was a heart-stopping run to the line for the 150th Melbourne Cup with So You Think the leader with 250m left to run before the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained French stayer Americain ran down Bart’s star and won running away.
Maluckyday, the surprise Melbourne Cup acceptor after winning The Lexus Stakes at Flemington last Saturday, backed up with an ultra impressive second place finish in the Cup today.
The emerging Zabeel four-year-old is definitely one to watch in the autumn and in next year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Luke Nolen who rode Maluckyday in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington this afternoon, already tipping him as the 2010 Melbourne Cup winner!
Despite looking very calm in the mounting yard, the hot favourite very relaxed moments before the Melbourne Cup jump, So You Think over-raced early in the running and didn’t have enough in the tank to finish off with the win.
The Melbourne Cup result for fourth and fifth placings was the same as 12 months ago, with veteran Zipping coming in fourth for the First Four wagers and Kiwi galloper Harris Tweed fifth for a second year successively.
The internationals, aside from winner Americain, had mixed results.
The next best placed runner from the northern hemisphere being the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Holberg in sixth for Godolphin, followed by seventh placegetter Manighar.
Bart Cummings’ other Melbourne Cup runner today Precedence could only manage eighth, the JRA Cup and Moonee Valley Cup winner ridden by James Winks after Nash Rawiller injured himself in a race fall earlier in the day.
Gai Waterhouse had a terrible result in the Melbourne Cup this year, her mare Once Were Wild finishing just outside the top 10 Melbourne Cup placegetters in 11th while Caulfield Cup winner Descarado failed to finish.
Official last place in this year’s Melbourne Cup went to Zavite, number 22nd in the finishing order over 47 lengths away.
