Wakeful Stakes Won by Brazilian Pulse – Derby Day Race 3 Results at Melbourne Cup Carnival

Michael Moroney’s classy filly Brazilian Pulse has won the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day today, the opening meeting of the 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival now well underway.

It was a very gallant win from the daughter of Captain Rio who had tough run all throughout the Wakeful getting caught out deep and wide.

The pace was set by Very Cherry and Placement, while the favourite Brazilian Pulse got stuck on the outside.

On the turn Very Cherry still held a narrow lead, Brazilian Pulse caught wide fifth on the outside at this stage.

On the straight Danny O’Brien’s Placement darted up on the inside with Heartsareforlove also challenging.

Heartsareforlove briefly took the lead, but Brazilian Pulse and jockey Craig Williams did not give up, battling on in a big brave run to move up and draw away from the field.

On the line it was Brazilian Pulse, with the photo finish showing Placement holding on for second in a terrific staying run and Heartsareforlove in third.

It was the first win for the favourite backers at Flemington today, Brazilian Pulse now set to storm to the top of the odds for next Thursday’s Crown Oaks.

Crown Oaks favourites going into the Wakeful were Dizlago and Shamrocker, but both were very dismal today.

The next race at Flemington, Race 4, is the first Group 1 feature of Victoria Derby Day, the $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

Star Witness is the favourite, but the team at Races.com.au are tipping an upset with Solar Charged rated special to win at good odds.

So take our Derby Day tip and back the Coolmore winner through Luxbet now!
