Rain, rain and more rain – that is the forecast for the next few days in Victoria. With heavy downfalls predicted for Saturday, the 2010 Victoria Derby Day races tomorrow and the 2010 Melbourne Cup next Tuesday have been thrown wide open with money starting to pour in for the known wet trackers.
In relation to tomorrow’s Victoria Derby Day, the Flemington track is currently rated a Good 3, but with up to 50mm of rain expected to fall tonight the condition could worsen to a Heavy 9 or 10 by tomorrow morning.
The headline race on the programme is the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m), where Rekindled Interest is the $3.50 at Luxbet.
The Redoute’s Choice gelding won the traditional Derby lead-up, the AAMI Vase, in fine style last weekend on a Dead track at Moonee Valley.
However, following closely is $3.70 second elect Retrieve, another proven performer in wet conditions.
The Peter Snowden-trained colt won the Norman Robinson Stakes last start on a Heavy Caulfield track and can win again here.
Other Victoria Derby contenders that will have no issue in the wet and are at good odds to add into the multiples include AAMI Vase runner-up Lion Tamer and Digital Fortress.
Online bookmaker [sportsbet] have reported that renowned mud lark Descarado, who won the Caulfield Cup on a Heavy track at Caulfield a fortnight ago, has been backed from $15 into $11 to win the Melbourne Cup.
“There are many horses at the top of the market who will relish the wet including Shocking, Americain, Shoot Out, Manighar and Profound Beauty, but Descarado has comfortably been the best-backed horse in the past 24 hours,” Haydn Lane from Sportsbet said.
Gai Waterhouse’s improving High Chaparral four-year-old Descarado is still paying a generous $12 at Luxbet in their Melbourne Cup markets.
