John O’Shea’s promising filly Elite Falls has won the opening race on the Cox Plate Day card this afternoon, scoring victory over an emerging field fellow Inglis two-year-old graduates in the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m).
The only runner in the field to have had a previous start, finishing fifth in the Gimcrack on debut earlier in the month, Elite Falls’ jockey Nash Rawiller capitalised on her experience on the straight to get her home for her maiden win.
Gillian Heinrich’s well-backed filly Pensive Dream got away quickly but it was Mirror Man who got to the front early.
Mirror Man was soon overtaken by Manor Lady while Pensive Dream ran strongly in the middle.
After the home turn, Elite Falls begin to make her move on the straight picking off her rivals one by one.
Racing to the lead in the final 150m, Elite Falls attacked the line and ran home strongly to beat an unlucky Masthead ($5.50 favourite) by a comprehensive two lengths with Manor Lady in third.
The next event to light up the Moonee Valley track and enjoy a punt on today is Race 2 – the $100,000 Listed Arrow Training Services Stakes (1600m) due to jump at 1:20pm (AEDST).
