The 2010 AAMI Vase, Race 6 on the Cox Plate Day card this afternoon, was won by Jim Conlan’s well-bred gelding Rekindled Interest who scored a smart win in the $200,000 Group 2 race ahead of a good field of fellow three-year-olds.
After an unlucky preparation marred by bad barrier draws and unfavourable track conditions, today was Rekindled Interests’ time to shine.
The well-deserved winner showed he was a genuine stayer on track for a run in the Group 1 Victoria Derby at Flemington next Saturday.
In the AAMI Vase there were some surprise push forward horses setting the pace, with five or so sitting across early and using juice up on the speed.
Lion Tamer eventually took to the front with the punters’ favourite Smokin’ Joey settling into fourth.
On the back straight at the 1000m mark Lion Tamer was still at the front, leading from Quarterbar and Glacier King, who eventually faded to finish dead last.
Pressure was quickly put on the front runners with Kudakulari beginning to move up on the outside on the scene and challenging, and Smokin’ Joey let go.
However on the home straight Smokin’ Joey dropped right off while Rekindled Interest found the front and pulled out a brilliant late burst to come right away from the field.
Winning jockey Dwayne Dunn always had Rekindled Interest ready to pounce, the solid stayer given a good trailing position and ideal ride.
On the line it was Rekindled Interest ($4.80 Luxbet) two and a quarter lengths ahead of Lion Tamer with Hollowlea a further length and a half third.
Odds on Rekindled Interest for the Victoria Derby are sure to shorten, so the sooner you get on him in the markets the better value you will find.
The race punters have been awaiting, the 2010 Cox Plate, is fast approaching but before the marquee event the $250,000 Group 2 Cathay Pacific Airways Cup (2500m) will run next, due to jump at 4:40pm (AEDST).
