Stuart Webb’s Yosei has claimed an upset win in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse today, beating home a field of the spring’s best fillies.
Going out as an $11 chance through [sportsbet], Yosei was ridden to perfection by jockey Michelle Payne who became the first female jockey to ever win the Thousand Guineas.
Payne had been given the chance to ride the more fancied Sistine Angel in the Thousand Guineas, but she stuck with Yosei and it paid off as the quality Invincible Spirit filly came through with the money.
Coming off some strong form, Yosei hadn’t finished better than fourth in her last three starts but peaked at the right time for the Thousand Guineas today, the running suiting her with the Caulfield track rated a Slow 7.
Jumping from barrier six, Yosei and Payne tracked on the back of some of the Sydney fillies and got a beautiful run the whole way on her home track.
A patient ride saw Payne hold Yosei back and not any others in the field until the time was right.
On the home straight Yosei came through with a brilliant turn of foot running to the front with 150m to go and pulling away to defeat roughie Heartsareforlove ($126) by a length and a half, an emphatic victory considering the conditions, with Michael Moroney’s highly fancied Brazillian Pulse ($4.80) in third.
It was a tremendous run by John Thompson’s Heartsareforlvoe who took to the front and set the pace early, holding on for second.
Brazillian Pulse also put in a good effort after being caught wide early, moving up to sit second and eventually finishing third.
Clear favourite More Strawberries missed the start and was never in the right position, well beaten on the line finishing sixth.
The next major Melbourne Spring Carnival feature race will take place at Caulfield this Saturday, the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
