2010 Caulfield Guineas Barrier Draw & Betting Preview

The betting markets for this Saturday’s 2010 Caulfield Guineas have opened at Sportsbet with Ilovethiscity and Toorak Toff battling for favouritism.

The $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) is the marquee race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s Caulfield Guineas Day this Saturday, and yesterday we reported that the 2010 Caulfield Guineas Final Field had attracted 16 three-year-old gallopers.

Of the runners, the Grahame Begg-trained Magic Albert colt Ilovethiscity has opened at the top of the betting markets, paying $4 through Sportsbet despite drawing widely with barrier 11.

Sydney raider Ilovethiscity will be ridden by Glen Boss on Saturday, who was aboard the colt for his last-start victory in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle where they overcame a wide barrier 14 draw to coast to victory.

Ilovethiscity looked in top form during trackwork with his Group 1 winning stablemate All Silent yesterday as the colt had his first look at Caulfield.

Following closely in the Caulfield Guineas odds is Toorak Toff at $4.50.

Trained by Rick Hore-Lacy, Golden Rose winner Toorak Toff has drawn midfield with barrier eight for Saturday and will have regular jockey Damien Oliver aboard.

Hore-Lacy was reportedly pleased with the barrier draw for his impressive Show A Heart colt, stating Toorak Toff should get a “gun run” from gate eight, expected to settle just off the pace before pulling out his brilliant turn of foot on the straight.

Three other runners are at single figure odds for the Saturday, with Redoute’s Choice gelding Rekindled Interest at $7, Anacheeva paying $8 and the David Payne-trained Masquerader at $9, who will be wearing blinkers for the first time this season.

Of the field, our value pick is Peter Moody’s Anacheeva who looks the horse to beat in the Caulfield Guineas after drawing on the rails with barrier one.

Coming off two consecutive wins in the McKenzie Stakes and Caulfield Guineas Prelude, Anabaa colt Anacheeva will have improved since their win in the Prelude and can race closely on the inside from their ideal draw.

It is a cracker day of racing planned for Caulfield this Saturday, with other highlights including the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) featuring So You Think and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) where Gai Waterhouse’s glamour mare More Joyous will get her next start.
