2010 Caulfield Cup Third Declarations Leaves 41 in Contention

The list of horses left in contention for the 2010 Caulfield Cup has been cut from 71 to 41 as the third declarations for the Melbourne Spring Carnival feature were taken by Racing Victoria today.

The $2.5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) is set to run on October 16 and has a field limit of 18 runners, making it a heated competition between the third acceptors to secure a spot in the final field.

Leading Australian trainer Bart Cummings claimed victory in the Caulfield Cup last year with Viewed, and has four of his horses still heading towards the event this year with Faint Perfume, Precedence, Dariana and Empires Choice.

Notable defectors from the Caulfield Cup following the third declaration stage include the Lloyd Williams-owned Alandi sent home after failing to impress in Australia and French stayer Americain targeting the Melbourne Cup instead.

Notable Defectors from 2010 Caulfield Cup Second Declarations:

  • Alandi (Robert Hickmott)
  • Americain (Alain de Royer Dupre)
  • Landlocked (Bart Cummings)
  • Mr Charlie (Peter Moody)
  • Trusting (John Thompson)
  • Speed Gifted (Lee Freedman)

The only horse exempt from elimination from the Caulfield Cup is Mark Kavanagh’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, now the top weight for the Caulfield feature with 57kg.

Early favourites in the Caulfield Cup betting that were accepted in the third declarations today but are still well down the order of entry include Ciaron Maher’s Moudre, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Herculian Prince who received a 2kg penalty following his win in the Group 1 The Metropolitan at Randwick last Saturday, Lloyd Williams’ Mourayan and JRA Cup winner Precedence.

These runners will attempt to gain a ballot exemption by winning either the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) or the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

International raiders still on the Caulfield Cup path include Hong Kong’s Mr Medici and Japanese stayer Tokai Trick.

The 2010 Melbourne Cup second declarations were also taken leaving 78 hopefuls.

Betting will reopen for these spring features at Sportsbet shortly with the updated odds, so get ready to place a bet on your favourites by g up with [sportsbet] now!
