There is sure to be a strong international presence in the 2010 Melbourne Cup field on Tuesday November 2 after the confirmation that two more overseas raiders, Bauer and Campanologist, are heading Down Under for the 150th running of the famous Flemington handicap.
Luca Cumani’s veteran grey Bauer finished a devastatingly close second to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup and after a two year injury enforced break, is back to give it another shot this year.
Bauer resumed racing after suffering a tendon injury in the 2008 Cup at the start of this month, finishing dead last in the Condition Stakes (2800m).
But Bauer ran an eye-catching fourth second-up last Friday in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Art Trial at Newbury after starting as a $67 long-shot, reportedly impressing connections.
Cumani has confirmed he is pressing on with 2010 Melbourne Cup plans with Bauer, currently an $81 chance to win through Sportsbet.

The other big name overseas stayer set to target the $6 million Melbourne Cup this spring is Godolphin’s Campanologist.
Prepared by the racing powerhouse’s head trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, six-year-old Campanologist booked a Melbourne Cup campaign following a very successful spring to date.
Campanologist has enjoyed two Group 1 victories over 2400m in this season and then finished third ahead of Bauer last start.
