Makybe Diva Colt Rockstardom Beaten on Debut

The first foal from triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva, Rockstardom started his much anticipated career today running fourth in a 1,300m maiden at Geelong.

The three-year-old colt by Irish Derby winner Galileo from the legendary Makybe Diva, who holds the Australian racehorse record of $14.5million in prizemoney, started at $5 and finished fourth to Eclair Surprise ($6.50) in the Jacobs Creek Super VOBIS 3YO Maiden Plate (1300m) earlier today.

Trained by Danny O’Brien at Flemington and raced by Tony Santic, Rockstardom was gallant in defeat after jumping well but got no luck being pushed three wide.

Ridden by James Wink Rockstardom finished just off the speed in a photo-finish for third, only three lengths back from the winner.

Rockstardom was purchased for $1.5 million as a yearling with O’Brien commenting that 2,000m and above will better suit the bred stayer.

The $1.5million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 30 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival is Rockstardom’s main aim this season.

The Group 1 AJC Australian Derby next autumn is also a possibility for the colt that O’Brien is hoping to get four or five years of racing from.

Makybe Diva is due to be covered next by former golden boy of racing Lonhro.
