Shoot Out has won the $1.3 million Group 1 AJC Australian Derby at Royal Randwick today after a dramatic late scratching at the barriers.
The John Wallace trained Shoot Out, ridden by Stathi Katsidis, held off a class field over the 2400m distance that saw Descarado finish second and Monaco Consul third in a photo finish with race favourite Zabrasive.
Count Encosta was a late scratching from the race after it’s back legs got stuck in the barrier delaying the start of the race. The delay meant that all of the other horses had to be removed from the barriers and calmed.
