Scenic Shot has won the Group One Mackinnon Stakes, beating many horses which were using the Derby Day feature as a final lead-up to next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
Stealing the lead in the turn to the straight, Scenic Shot closed in on race leader Cima De Triomphe to win by two lengths.
The race started out with Sir Slick taking the lead followed by Drumbeats, race favourite Rangirangdoo and Miss Maren.
Leading by three lengths, Sir Slick was over taken by British import Cima De Triomphe while Rangirangdoo slipped back in the pack.
At the 800m meter mark, Cima De Triomphe led by a narrow head while Rangirangdoo crept back up to fourth position as the pack bunched up before the straight.
Coming into the straight, Rangirangdoo ran on the outside and at the 300m mark Scenic Shot pushed up to the lead and was unchallenged in the final 200m run to home.
Miss Maren ran second followed by 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed while Sir Slick ran home last.
Jockey Daniel Morton was overjoyed by the win while stand-in trainer Len Morton commented on great the horse’s year has been and he has “topped it off beautifully”.
