Mick Price’s visiting Melbourne-trained filly Jazz Song has opened clear favourite in the 2014 Gai Waterhouse Classic odds for the fillies’ and mares’ showdown at Ipswich Racecourse on Saturday.

There are 14 hopefuls engaged in this year’s $100,000 Listed Sky Racing Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m), the handicap clash running as Ipswich Race 5 at 2:30pm to kick off the Black Type action of the day.
Of those it is young Fastnet Rock three-year-old Jazz Song leading the Gai Waterhouse Classic odds at a current quote of $3.40.
Drawn midfield in barrier seven with Jim Byrne to ride, Jazz Song carries 55.5kg which is just half a kilo more than the weight she had on her back last time out on May 31.
On Queensland Oaks Day at Eagle Farm she took on the boys in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) and did well to run just half a length away fifth behind Sir Moments.
Before that she also ran fifth in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) in a good effort behind subsequent Stradbroke Handicap third placed filly Srikandi.
Jazz Song then has form around some very nice types and from the nice barrier up against her own type here is considered the one to beat.
There are then three other single figure fancies in the Gai Waterhouse Classic betting markets with two occupying the second line of betting.
Breakfast In Bed (barrier three) and Griante (barrier 12) may have had very different luck in the Gai Waterhouse Classic barrier draw but they’re both paying $5.50 to win.
Sydney visitor Breakfast In Bed from the stables of David Vandyke comes off a 1200m win at Randwick in a Benchmark 80 over 1200m, the Hussonet four-year-old stepping up in distance here.
She’s got winning form over 1400m in Sydney from earlier this year though so that is sure to suit, as will the gate that is just one wider than the barrier (2) she won from last time out.
Griante meanwhile is in flying form, the David Brideoake & David Feel-trained Good Journey filly having won her past three on the trot.
The progressive three-year-old makes her Queensland debut here at start number nine having won four of her previous eight runs, the most recent of which was over the mile at Sandown.
Rounding out the single figure chances at $8.50 is then Avaladyluck in gate six for Sunshine Coast horseman Stuart Kendrick.
The Bradbury’s Luck mare comes off black type form from the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, her latest effort being a nice second to Ellawisdom in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) on Queensland Oaks Day a fortnight back.
Just outside those under double figures are then a number of other live wire hopes including Lacey Morrison’s Toowoomba galloper Tukiyo ($10) last seen crossing fourth in the Glenlogan Park Stakes on May 24, Juanmo Stakes third placed Pickabee ($12) who also has form around Srikandi and Michael Moroney’s Kiwi import Spitfire Lady ($15).
